PARENT GUIDE

At what age must a child benefit from Abacus Maths Tuitions?
Children are welcome to enrol at any age from four to thirteen years old. Every child is assessed individually when enrolled and unless the child has had previous Soroban abacus training, it is normal that they will join either the Toddler or the Runner programme depending on their age and ability.
What are the class sizes?
The Abacus Maths Tuition levels require ample attention, support and guidance from the tutor and are hence designed to be taught in small class room sizes. Each class will have 10-12 children at the very most. Personal attention is given to every child in the class.
What is the duration of each class and the overall programme?
The full programme is completed over three years and is divided into 8 levels combining both basic and advanced stages. Each level runs for a term of 12 weeks though children vary in their abilities and skills.

Children attend classes for 1.5 hours a week which are a combination of formal teaching and necessary warm-up exercises and games. The learning environment is fun filled and group interaction is encouraged in order that the children build up their social skills while at the classes.
What are the course fees?
Classes are conducted only during the term time. Fee is £20 per session X number of sessions per term.

There is also a one-off £100 registration fee. All children are given the course material, study books, a 13 rod Soroban abacus, a carry bag as well as a T-shirt. Any course completion certificates are also included within this fee.
Is there any home work?
While the children are taught course work while in class, Abacus Maths Tuition can only be successful for the learners if they continue their learning at home too, in form of regular practice.
In addition to classroom sessions, the children will be required to practice at home for 20 minutes every weekday. These short practice sessions are important for the development of the brain in adapting itself for new learning techniques.
My child is left handed. Will this affect their learning of the Soroban techniques?
This is not a problem. We suggest that the child start with the use of their dominant hand. The technique taught at Abacus Maths Tuition will allow them to use both their hands in performing maths calculations.
What if my child is termed as below average in Maths skills at their school?
The classes conducted by Abacus Maths Tuition are for children of all abilities even those termed below average. The objective of these tuitions to assist the child in gaining confidence in maths calculations.
The instructors are professionals fully trained by SmartKids Abacus Pvt Ltd, and attend regular training courses throughout the programme.
